The School Bus Loading Zone Crisis

Thousands

Children injured in school bus–related incidents each year per NHTSA data.

Every day across the United States, thousands of drivers illegally pass stopped school buses. According to national surveys conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, more than 130,000 vehicles pass stopped school buses illegally in a single day. Over the course of a school year, that represents tens of millions of stop-arm violations nationwide.

At the same time, the area immediately surrounding a stopped bus—known as the loading zone—remains one of the most hazardous environments for children. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that thousands of children are injured in school bus–related incidents each year, with many injuries occurring while students are boarding or leaving the bus.

While traditional stop arms provide an important legal signal, they can still be overlooked by distracted or impatient drivers. Improving visibility, driver awareness, and physical presence around the bus is critical to protecting students during the moments when they are most vulnerable.

Expanding the Safety Zone Around the Bus

CrossGuard™ is designed to address this problem by extending the visual and physical presence of the stopped bus into the adjacent traffic lane. By projecting a highly visible arm outward from the stop sign assembly, CrossGuard increases driver awareness and helps define a clear safety perimeter around the loading zone.

The result is a system that helps make the stopped school bus more visible, more recognizable, and harder for approaching drivers to ignore. By combining improved visibility and optional audio cues with rugged engineering, CrossGuard helps transportation providers enhance protection in the school bus loading zone while maintaining the reliability required for daily fleet operation.
